KINDERGARTEN: READY OR NOT?

Whether or not to send your child to kindergarten is a concern for many parents. We all want our children to succeed and whether or not you choose to put your child in kindergarten can have a significant influence on their success in school and beyond.

There isn’t just one indicator that determines whether your child is ready for kindergarten. Experts agree that a child’s development needs to be evaluated in several key areas. While academics is important, such as knowing their ABC’s, counting to at least 10, identifying shapes and colors, writing their first name and engaging in literature; there is a range of social and developmental factors to consider as well. Is my child able to pay attention and control her impulses? Can she follow simple directions? Does she persist even when a task is difficult? Does she play well with peers?

At Landmark, our Fives program offers a Kindergarten level curriculum that is taught in a small, personalized classroom environment, using a hands-on approach to learning. This engaging curriculum includes not only core subjects such as phonics, literacy, math and science, but also incorporates special subjects such as art, world language, technology, gym and music. The children in Landmark Five’s program benefit from a challenging curriculum with support and individualized attention that allows them to engage in learning while experiencing success.

For every parent grappling with this question, remember that you know your child better than anyone else does. You are his first and most important teacher, and ultimately you will know what is best for your child. If you are still unsure, get advice from your child’s current preschool teacher. She will have a good idea as to whether she thinks your child is ready or not based on your child’s personality, temperament and abilities in the classroom.
